This is a period piece in several senses. A 1983 television adaptation (by Thomas Ellice) of a short story by Francis King, it is set in rural England in the 1930s, and concerns the brief but transforming friendship between Mona, a quiet teenage working-class girl and Capt. Manson, a solitary WWI veteran whose health has been destroyed by mustard gas. There are also touches of class tension between Mona's family and the local grande dame, and hints of a special relationship between Manson and a departed fellow soldier.
